Tucked down the alley off Laurens Street a block from Main, the Beer Exchange has spent well over a decade as the West End's craft beer anchor. The front of the house is a bottle shop, shelves sorted by style, with a section set aside just for South Carolina brewers and singles you can pull together into your own six-pack. Keep walking and the building opens into a taproom in the back. The tap wall stays in motion, usually around twenty rotating pours of beer, cider, and mead, with a growler station for filling up to go. A recent expansion added a larger taproom and a small private tasting room, plus a wine program built around organic, small-batch producers that runs guided flights for anyone who wants to sit down and learn. There is no kitchen, so people bring food in or order delivery to the table, and the staff tend to walk newcomers through the whole wall instead of just pointing at it. A pinball machine, a real shelf of non-alcoholic options, and a dog-friendly door keep the place easygoing no matter how deep the list goes. Regulars have called it the gold standard for craft beer downtown for years, and the reason is built in: what is pouring and what is on the shelf is never quite the same twice. The only way to know what landed this week is to head down the alley and see.
