Few hikes start with a paddle, which is exactly what makes Copper Island special. Sitting about 2 km off the beach at Shuswap Lake Provincial Park in Scotch Creek, the island has a 2.5 km loop trail that climbs to its summit for panoramic views of Shuswap Lake and Blind Bay. Most visitors make a half-day of it: paddle or boat across, hike the loop, then cool off on the island's small beaches.
Trail at a glance
- Distance: 2.5 km loop
- Time: about 1 hour
- Difficulty: More difficult (steep in places)

Good to know
- No camping and no fires on the island
- There are steep cliffs — stay well back from the edges
- Watch for boat traffic when crossing, and check wind conditions before setting out in a canoe, kayak or on a paddleboard
- Bring everything you need, and pack out all garbage
